Journal Entry #7

This past weekend, my husband and I reverted ourselves back to nature :)
We went camping at a nearby State Park and enjoyed the rustic lifestyles with luxuries of today's society.

Upon entering the park we encountered so much wildlife!! There were 2 deer just walking up the drive of the State Park!

"Home Sweet Home"
We arrived a little after 7 and got to work right away setting up our tent :)  It's funny the little things you take for granted and do not think about taking...like maybe a hammer for the metal tent stakes??

Ok yes, I know...I know...But lets be honest- this is Florida!! We had to have a fan!  And the tv was brought along to watch a film to do a critique for another class :)

My dad is in the Army Reserves, and thankfully he had two WONDERFUL Army cots that my husband and I slept on rather than the ground :)

There were many nature trails at this State Park and we enjoyed all of them.  There were a lot of wildlife and plant life all around the park that most people probably take for granted.

One of the most common plant life were the Saw Palmetto. The Saw Palmetto is a low growing palm found over much of Florida and is especially common in pine flat-woods.  It has rows of sharp spines along the stems of the leaves somewhat resembling a saw.  It grows here on spots that are seldom covered by water and may form large thickets.  It produces numerous black berries that are eaten by a number of animals.

The water along this State Park is part of the Ochlockonee River.  This is a brackish river which contains a mixture of fresh and salt water.

While I very much would have loved to get in the water, it was much much too cold!

Us  :)
Enjoying the nature trail.

Here are some of the blackberries that the palmetto trees produce.

A closer view of the blackberries.

There were many trees like this one along the nature trail.  The park tries to preserve the healthy trees and those that are no longer healthy due to age or physical shape are left to fall such as this one.

After a long day of enjoying the nature around the park, we headed back to do some relaxing :)  I thoroughly enjoyed reading the required text in our class, A Land Remembered.  I found it very fitting and easy to relate to as I was experiencing nature in a more primitive way.

And dinner is served!

And a camping trip could not be complete without roasting marshmallows and making smores!

I learned a lot from the required reading in A Land Remembered, but relating to family, and also relating back to nature and how things are taken for granted.  I brought myself back to reality a bit with this trip over the weekend and I think it's something everyone could use from time to time!
